Government Rebates for Water Tanks

National Water Tanks Rebate

National Programs

On 10 May 2011 the Australian Government announced that it will no longer be providing rebates for rainwater tanks or greywater systems under the National Rainwater and Greywater Initiative.

Rainwater tanks or greywater systems purchased after 10 May 2011 will not be eligible for an Australian Government rebate.

Householders may still apply for a rebate for rainwater tanks or greywater systems that were purchased on or before 10 May 2011. However all applications must be received by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities by
10 November 2011.

Applications will not be accepted after this time.

The National Rainwater and Greywater (NRGI) Household Rebate offers rebates of up to $500 for new rainwater tanks or greywater systems.

Subject to the eligibility criteria, rebates are available for either:

  • the purchase and installation of a new rainwater tank(s) which is connected to the toilet and/or laundry by a licensed plumber ('plumbed in' as defined in the definitions section of the NRGI Household Rebate Guidelines) OR
  • the purchase and installation of a greywater system, (as defined in the definitions section of the NRGI Household Rebate Guidelines) which is installed by a licensed plumber.

The following rebates are available:

  • $500 for rainwater tank(s) with a total capacity of more than 4,000 litres (must be plumbed in for indoor water use by a licensed plumber).
  • $500 for a permanent greywater system (as defined in the NRGI Household Rebate guidelines) which is installed by a licensed plumber.

Northern Territory (NT) Water Tanks Rebate

  • Households, not for profit organisation or community group purchasing and installing a water tank in Victoria  since 1 March 2010 may be eligible for a rebate of up to $900.

New South Wales (NSW) Water Tanks Rebate

  • The tank(s) must have a minimum 2,000 litre capacity and be purchased in full and installed between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2011 inclusive.
  • Rainwater tanks installed to comply with BASIX (the Building Sustainability Index) for new homes, major renovations or a pool installation are not eligible for a rebate.

Victoria (VIC) Water Tanks Rebate

  • Households purchasing and installing a water tank in Victoria  from 1 January 2007 to 30 June 2011 are now eligible for a rebate of up to $1000.

South Australia (SA) Water Tanks Rebates

The rainwater tank and plumbing rebate available under the Home Rebate Scheme includes:
A rebate of between $200 and up to $1000 is now being offered towards the cost of purchasing and plumbing a rainwater tank into your home for uses such as toilet fl ushing, all cold water outlets in laundry and for hot water supply.
